Risen, Ascended, Glorified.

The Ascension of our Lord has at least three important consequences for believers:

First, the Ascension is the enthronement of Jesus in heaven (“seated at the right hand of the Father” in the Creed). The Son of God takes his rightful place as Lord of Lords at the Ascension; he also raises humanity to its full dignity by bringing it to the Father.

Second, Jesus forever intercedes for us at the throne of grace. Because he was one of us by his Incarnation, Christ understands our human frailty and is our advocate in heaven.

Finally, the Ascension assures us that Christ’s incarnation was not a temporary expedient, useful but not important. The humanity of Jesus Christ, now glorified, is eternal. The value and holiness of the physical creation is shown forth by being drawn up into heaven itself. Thus, God affirms the depth of his love for and commitment to us, his human creatures.

An Ascension Day Collect
Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that as we believe your only‑begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into heaven, so we may also in heart and mind there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.
